Instruct children to use water efficiently for washing hands.

Description
Children love water, which often ends up with much of it going down the drain needlessly. Take the time to teach children the proper method to wash hands that minimizes the flow of hot water down the drain. While they should still wash effectively to remove dirt and germs, they can be instructed to minimize "playing" in the water thus saving the energy needed to replenish hot water.Tags

Assumptions We Made
3 washings each day reduced from 3 minutes (with playing, water on full blast) to 1 minute (with no playing, minimal water flow). Assume 1 gallon/minute flow (at full blast) is now saved for 2 minutes and hot water is used. So, 2 gallons/washing, or 6 gallons/day for 365 days per year. Assumes school-age child. Younger children home more days would have more washings/day (hopefully!). Energy savings from water heater spreadsheet. ELECTRIC water heater. This action expires after 3 months because we assume your kids need to hear it again and again and again :)Impacts
