Turn off, and unplug, printers connected to home computers when not in use.

Description

If printers are used rarely, keep them turned off, or even unplugged, when not in use. This is especially important for printers that have a lighted display that is lit when the printer is idle, as the light is consuming electricity.

Assumptions We Made

Assume printer is originally always "on" (3W) 24 hours in a day, and that it is actually printing 1 hour each day (probably high). Now, printer is "off" (0 W) for 23 hours of the day, and "on" and printing 1 hour each day. http://www.psnh.com/Residential/ReduceBill/ApplianceUsage.asp; http://www.energyrating.gov.au/library/pubs/sb200303-printers.pdf
