Turn off the lights if you are leaving a room for more than 10 minutes.

Description

Turn out the lights if you are leaving a room for more than 10 minutes, especially if the light bulb is incandescent. The on/off frequency of a bulb can shorten its life, but only a small amount. For incandescent bulbs, the on/off cycle frequency has a minimal impact of bulb life. For CFL bulbs, the on/off cycle frequency should be considered. With a regular on/off frequency of less than 5 minutes (meaning the time from turning off the bulb to turning the bulb back on is less than five minutes), a CFL life span is reduced to that of an incandescent. So, if you think you'll be out of the room for more than 10 minutes, it is okay to turn the light off.

Assumptions We Made

Switching off 60 W incandescent bulb (high wattage), over a 4 hour period, light is turned off for 20 minutes while room is vacant (two 10 minute periods). This is done every day for the year.

Impacts

Initial Impacts

Each time you carry out this action, the immediate impacts are:

  • Saves 0.00 dollars
  • Saves 0.02 kilowatt hours
  • Saves 0.03 lbs of CO2

Ongoing Impacts

Some actions also have additional impact over time. For this action, these are:

  • Unknown

Potential Annual Impact

We assume that this action will be carried out daily (about 160 times a year). In this case, in a year you could save:
  • 0.32 dollars
  • 3.20 kilowatt hours
  • 4.32 lbs of CO2
