Description
Replace one incandescent light bulb with a compact fluorescent light bulb. Compact fluorescent light bulbs provide the same amount of light (lumens) as incandescent light bulbs but at far lower wattages. Only about 10% of the energy that goes into an incandescent bulb is converted into visible light, the other 90% is non-visible light and thermal radiation (heat), and thus is wasted during use. To assure high quality light and bulb operation, purchase Energy Star certified compact fluorescent light bulbs. Energy Star certified light bulbs meet criteria for low wattage, lamp efficiency, rated lifetimes, operating characteristics, reliability and safety.Tags

Assumptions We Made
Switching from 60 Watt bulb to 16 Watt bulb with equivalent lumens (light output), light used 4 hours per day, 365 days per year. Assumes CFLs last for about 8000 hours http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=cfls.pr_crit_cfls. You can read more about the life cycle of CFLs here http://thewatt.com/node/175Impacts
Initial Impacts
Each time you carry out this action, the immediate impacts are:
- Costs 4.00 dollars
Ongoing Impacts
Some actions also have additional impact over time. For this action, these are:
- Saves 6.21 dollars per year
- Saves 64.28 kilowatt hours per year
- Saves 87.29 lbs of CO2 per year
Potential Annual Impact
We assume that this action will be carried out monthly (about 12 times a year). In this case, in a year you could save:- 26.66 dollars
